The theatrical release of “Air” by Amazon Studios has premiered in the USA, receiving mostly positive reviews from both critics and audiences, particularly for the direction and performances by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, as well as the film’s excellent script. Despite receiving positive reviews and having high expectations for its opening numbers, the film’s box office performance is disappointing for the makers due to its high production costs.
Air Movie Box Office Performance: Hit or Flop?

According to reports, “Air” featuring Ben Affleck and Matt Damon was released in over 3500 theaters across the USA on April 5, 2023. The film earned $3.29 million on its opening day and $14.45 million during its opening weekend at the domestic box office[1]— while this figure is expected for a debut, it fell short of makers and underperformed numbers compared to the film’s medium-budgeted cost. The pic’s total is currently stand at $52.45 million domestically and $37.20 million overseas, for a global total of $89.65 million.
As per reports, “Air” is a medium-budget film with a production budget of approx $70-90 million. The makers also spent around $40 million on marketing, which puts the break-even point at $190-200 million. As of now, the prospects of “Air” grossing $200 million at the box office seem like an impossible mission despite positive reviews, making it evident that “Air” is failing commercially. Even recouping $90 million seems like a considerable challenge given the current box office projections, and it appears that “Air” is not just a failure but also a significant financial loss for the makers and distributors involved.

“Air” was originally produced as an Amazon Prime Original. However, due to a positive response from test screenings, the makers decided to release the film theatrically. Unfortunately, this decision now appears to have backfired as the film is a box-office flop. On the bright side, at least the makers will not have to bear any losses due to the release on Amazon Prime.
In terms of critical response, “Air” has received a rating of 7.5/10* on IMDb based on 86k+ votes, and on Rotten Tomatoes, it has scored 92% based on 316 reviews by critics.
