After a long gap of many years and hard work of the makers, finally, the biggest sequel of the film industry ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ is all set for its box office opening this Friday (16th December)[1], and everyone has mammoth expectations from the film due to the extra large success and buzz of the ‘Avatar (2009)’. Even though the name “Avatar” is enough for a good start, it is not a short race but a long marathon, and James Cameron has already mentioned it. So will ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ be successful and live up to the expectations of the makers?
Avatar 2 Box Office Prediction

Since ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ is a sequel to ‘Avatar (2009)’, the film has an immense buzz in the audience, and the pre-ticket sale for the film is exceptional all over the world from the USA to South Korea. Based on this buzz and pre-sales alone, the production and experts are aiming for a minimum domestic opening of $185-200 million from ‘Avatar 2’ in over 4500 theatres. Even that’s a good start, but still, according to industry sources, ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ will take an opening of over $200 million, which is a record-breaking number for 2022.
The opening numbers look good, but in reality, it’s nothing special because ‘Avatar 2’ is a big name and has potential like ‘Endgame’, and the cost of the film is the same as that of ‘Endgame’. Besides domestic opening, ‘Avatar 2’s box office table is better overseas than compared to domestic; whether it is in the United Kingdom or India, opening expectations look very impressive in terms of lifetime performance also; but domestically there must be something special.

It’s supposed to be a long-running film and the lifetime gross expectations are currently at $600-800 million domestically and $1 billion overseas, for a global total of $1.5-1.8 billion; while according to reports, it carries a budget of $350-400 million before P&A and as per James Cameroon, the break-even point of $2 billion, that doesn’t sound true. Even though ‘Avatar 2’ is going to become the biggest film of the year 2022, leaving behind ‘Top Gun Maverick’ and ‘Multiverse of Madness’, in the terms of profit, ‘Avatar 2’ is still pretty down, and as of now, there is no word-of-mouth effect.
