Walt Disney Studios’ latest animated film, ‘Elemental’, is on its way to its box office debut with positive feedback from critics[1]. However, despite the good reviews, the film doesn’t seem to be providing any relief for Walt Disney because there is no special buzz or conversations surrounding the film among the audience, which is not going well for a production whose already slipping instead of progressing the ladder of success. After facing many significant losses, it is probably difficult for Disney to survive and bear another big loss.
Elemental Box Office Prediction

Despite receiving strong reviews from critics, the lack of buzz and pre-ticket sales surrounding Walt Disney film is disheartening for its makers, who have invested heavily in its production. Industry experts are already predicting a disappointing opening for ‘Elemental’, with expectations set at $30-35 million for its debut weekend across over 4000 theaters in North America— this projection falls below expectations and is considered a poor start for a high-budget animated film. Adding to the challenge, ‘Elemental’ is also set to compete with the highly anticipated DCEU’s ‘The Flash’ at the box office. Due to the immense buzz surrounding the DC film, ‘Elemental’ will open with even lower numbers than initially projected.
According to Industry reports, Walt Disney Studios invested a massive $200 million in the production of ‘Elemental’, along with an additional $80-100 million for marketing expenses, to reach a break-even point and achieve profitability, the film would need to generate significant revenue. However, given the lack of buzz and anticipation surrounding the movie, recovering just the production budget is already in question. Overseas markets are also showing signs of disappointment, further diminishing the prospects of reaching the break-even point— let alone turning a profit.
Industry estimates suggest that ‘Elemental’ is projected to conclude its box office run with around $100-115 million domestically and $135-150 million from overseas markets, resulting in a global total of $250 million. Considering the film’s $200 million budget, these numbers indicate that ‘Elemental’ is heading towards becoming another box office disaster and financial loss for Walt Disney Studios.

While the concept of creating an animated film centered around the topic of Elements may have seemed like a promising idea, the decision to invest a staggering $200 million in its production appears rather imprudent for Walt Disney. It becomes even more questionable considering the result of films like ‘The Little Mermaid’, ‘Strange World’, ‘Lightyear’, ‘Turning Red’, and ‘Encanto’ Etc. The studio’s persistence in pursuing such a costly endeavor, despite back-to-back losses, is perplexing and difficult to comprehend. Ultimately, it seems that the production will have to bear the burden of this decision, adding to the string of disappointments faced by Walt Disney Studios.
