Marvel’s highly anticipated superhero flick, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”, the third installment of the series, is ready to begin its box office journey this Friday[1]. Everyone has high expectations for it, whether it be the common audience or the makers, especially considering the lack of success of some recent projects in the Marvel universe. But the biggest question is whether the threequel is capable of living up to those expectations or it will deal another blow to Marvel like the recent releases. Therefore, it is very complicated to give a simple answer, but there is a high possibility that the third installment does not provide relief to the makers.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 Box Office Prediction

As a Marvel film, there is a lot of buzz surrounding “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”, which suggests that it will get off to a good start. However, its success will largely depend on critical response, and unfortunately, early critical indications are not promising, as it appears that the film will have a decent but not exceptional start. And according to Industry experts, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” will collect $120-130 million on its opening weekend across 4200+ theaters in the USA— it is generally considered a good start but fuss and below-expected from Marvel’s reputation and also too low compared to last few releases of productions. Also, less than “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” ($146.51 million).
Reports indicate that “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”, a must-important film of MCU Phase 5, comes with a massive budget of $250 million before marketing expenses. And the significant investment in the film suggests that if it fails to cross the $1 billion mark, it will be a massive disappointment for MCU to recover from. Unfortunately, the current box office projections do not appear to be in favor. The critical response to the film is nothing special, which is reducing its lifetime potential, and at present, the threequel is projected to earn $270-300 million domestically and $650-700 million globally in its lifetime run.

Despite the significant investment of effort and money, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” has failed to meet expectations, and the box office projections indicate that it is headed towards failure. The makers of the film have spent a considerable amount of money on it, and there is a possibility that they may be unable to recover their investment. Additionally, the distributors may also face losses. It is surprising to see that the most successful universe in the industry is struggling at the box office. As a result, viewers seem to be losing faith in Marvel after the critical disappointments of their recent films.

This seems misleading. Other sources are saying the film is looking at a $120 – $155 million domestic opening weekend, and is early tracking for a $288 – $403 million domestic total. Wakanda Forever also cost 250 million, and it grossed 850 million, with 450 million domestically, which means it ended up turning an estimated profit of $259 million. This is objectively a success, though not the kind of success MCU films had prior to the pandemic. Things are different now, and we need to view things from that lens.
