One of the best and buzziest sequels in the film industry, the sequel to ‘Black Panther (2018)’, Marvel’s ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’, has performed up to expectations before and after its released. It has received mostly positive reviews from the critics and the audience, especially for the highly emotional touch and cast’s performance, and as a big film with good reviews, ‘Black Panther 2’ has also given a great performance at the box office. But still, something is missing, which may not be as expected.
Is Black Panther Wakanda Forever Hit Or Flop?
As per reports, Marvel’s ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ was released in the USA on November 11, 2022, in more than 4300 theaters, collected $84.28 million on its debut day and $181.33 million on its opening weekend at the domestic box office, while the total gross of the film is currently at $453.81 million domestically and $404.73 million overseas, for a global total of $858.55 million.
Undoubtedly, ‘Black Panther 2’ has performed pretty outstanding at the ticket window, but besides the performance, looking at landing costs, then the production cost of the film itself is $250 million, including $200 million for P&A, its total of over $500 million and breaks even point of $650 million+. $650 million is like a big wall, but there is no doubt that ‘Black Panther 2’ has crossed it as a big movie, and there are currently around $850 million global lifetime expectations from the film. Overall, it means that ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ is a Box Office Hit, and distributors and production can earn $100 million profit from the box office alone.
Even though ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ is moving towards success, it’s also a fact that compared to ‘Black Panther (2018)‘, the performance of ‘Wakanda Forever’ is nothing special; while before its release, it was expected to mark the biggest opening and highest grosser of the year 2022 with beating ‘Multiverse of Madness’. But one thing is in favor the word of mouth of the film is too good, which is a relief from the point of view of Phase 5.
Talking about the critical response, ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ received a 6.8/10 IMDB rating based on 232k votes, and on Rotten Tomatoes, it scored 84/100% based on 428 reviews.

So in marvel terms it’s a flop
Steve, those are your terms…you don’t speak for Marvel…
Flop. Box office is because of all the hype for a movie that falls short.
Picasso Micheaux, either way it’s flop
Giant steaming pile of post chewed and digested material. FLOP.
It has achieved 5.9% or the US Box Office Total for the Year (So far) – exactly the same % as what Black Panther managed of the US Box Office in 2018. The US Box Office for the Year 2022 is only 57% of 2018. People cannot spend the way they did a few years ago. Given that …..
Wakanda forever is tracking worse that Multiverse of Madness (slightly better domestically, much worse internationally> so much for cross-cultural appeal) and it cost $50 Million more to make. Multiverse was definitively considered a flop, but for some reason a movie that cost more and is making less, is considered a ‘blockbuster’. I guess there’s a differenct standard of expectations. I’m sure it’s the audiences fault.
The numbers don’t work.
$250 million + $100-$150 million on the ad campaign means
A box office of $700-$800 million to break even.
+40% to 60% ticket sales goes to cinemas (not production companies)
