Following the success of 2022, Universal Pictures started 2023 with the horror genre film ‘M3GAN’, and it has also proved that this production is now in the sky of success. The killer robot doll has received mostly excellent reviews from critics and the audience—especially for its cast’s performance, production values, humor, and horror; alongside the reviews, the small film is also outstandingly at the ticket window. As per reports, ‘M3GAN’ is totally on the way to ‘Smile’; in short small business, big profit.
Is M3GAN Hit or Flop?
According to reports, Universal Pictures’ sci-fi horror ‘M3GAN’— the direction by Gerard Johnstone and starring Allison Williams and Violet McGraw— released in the USA on January 6, 2023, in over 3400 theaters, collecting $11.72 million on its opening day (including $2.75 million from Thursday previews) and $30.42 million on its opening weekend in North America, which is over expectations and a solid debut for a small-budgeted film. It has so far grossed $95.04 million domestically and $81.06 million overseas, for a global total of $176.11 million.
As per reports, the production cost of ‘M3GAN’ is just $12 million, and after impactful marketing, it carries the break-even point of just $30 million. $30 million is too small at the time for the film because‘M3GAN’ has performed above the mark and is currently in the profit zone— from the opening weekend. It is expected that ‘M3GAN’ will earn $175+/- million on its overall box office run despite clashing with ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ at the ticket window. Considering the performance on the table, it’s too clear that ‘M3GAN’ is an enormous box office success for Universal, as ‘Smile’ has been for Paramount.
There is no doubt that the credit for the entire success of ‘M3GAN’ will be given to its excellent marketing adapted from ‘Smile’s marketing—performing in stadiums, streets, and on TikTok dressed as movie characters— it is also true that it is proving to be one of the most impactful ways to market small films. Also factor, Universal is way ahead in the horror genre, and other productions should learn from them to earn more profit from small-cost films, but yeah, the film has to be great too.
Talking about the critical response, ‘M3GAN’ has received a 6.4/10* IMDb rating based on 100k+ votes, and on Rotten Tomatoes, it scored 93/100% based on 305 critical reviews.
