Gerard Butler’s R-rated action thriller ‘Plane’ has been released in the USA and has received mostly positive reviews from critics and audiences as an R-rated film—in short, it has been successful in entertaining the audience. Also, ‘Plane’ has taken the experts by surprise with its over-expected opening at the box office. But there is no doubt that despite doing so well, the box office performance is not a happy thing for the makers due to its cost of making.

As per reports, the action thriller ‘Plane’—the direction by Jean-François Richet and starring Gerard Butler, Mike Colter, Yoson An, and Tony Goldwyn— released in the USA on January 13, 2023, in over 3000 theaters, collecting $3.5 million on its opening day and $10.26 million on its opening weekend at the domestic box office; an over expected start but not well for production. Overall, it has so far grossed $32.11 million domestically and $20.11 million overseas, for a worldwide total of $52.22 million[1].
According to reports, the production cost of the ‘Plane’ itself is $50 million (due to COVID expenses), and it’s before P&A. Compared to its production cost only, the ‘Plane’ has underperformed at the ticket window and total commercial failure without any doubt because collecting around $100 million isn’t possible at the moment for the film, while break-even mark is unimaginable— all of these despite receiving positive reviews from the critics.
Perhaps ‘Plane’ is a good film, but the makers didn’t pay enough attention to marketing the film, which is considered to be the most crucial part of production today. But if we keep behind the views of makers and critics, then this film will be Lionsgate’s first and already one of the biggest failures of 2023— a poor start for the studio.
Talking about the critical response, ‘Plane’ has received a 6.5/10* IMDb rating based on 50k+ Votes, and on Rotten Tomatoes, it scored 77/100% based on 162 critical reviews.
