According to reports, the Vikings’ revenge saga ‘The Northman’, released in the USA on 22 April 2022 in more than 3200 theaters, collected only $5.6 million on its opening day and $12.29 million on its opening weekend at the domestic (USA & Canada) box office. Overall, ‘The Northman’ has so far collected $34.23 million at the domestic (USA & Canada) box office and $68.72 million at the worldwide box office, including $34.49 million at overseas theaters[1]. The production budget for ‘The Northman’ is around $70-90 million.
Despite the film receiving positive reviews from critics, there is no doubt that ‘The Northman’ has failed to do well at the box office, and not only this, but ‘The Northman’ performed below expectations at the box office. Before the release, critics expected a $20 million weekend from ‘The Northman’, but with the collection of $12 million, the film failed to fill the expectations, and it’s a poor performance for ‘The Northman’.
According to reports, ‘The Northman’ needs $200 million box office to cover its production and P&A costs but looking at current performance, there is no sign ‘The Northman’ will be collecting $100 million at the box office, and overall, ‘The Northman’ is one of the biggest failures of 2022 at the box office, same as ‘Moonfall’ and ‘Cyrano’.
The reason behind the failure of ‘The Northman’ is the film release alongside DreamWorks’ ‘The Bad Guys’ and Lionsgate’s ‘The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent’, and due to the release of these films, instead of 4000+ theaters, ‘The Northman’ was released only in 3234 domestic theaters. Not only this, DreamWorks’ ‘The Bad Guys’ is a major film, which affected ‘The Northman’ at the box office because the buzz of ‘The Bad Guys’ is too high and release alongside with this, not good decision for ‘The Northman’ makers.
‘The Northman’ is the first big film directed by Robert Eggers on a $70-90 million production budget, and it has proved to be a good film for Riggers in terms of reviews but quite bad in terms of the box office. Talking about critical responses, then ‘The Northman’ received a 7.1/10* IMDb rating baased on 187k votes, and on Rotten Tomatoes, it scored 89/100% based on 369 reviews.
