Universal Pictures and Blumhouse’s latest collaboration, ‘Night Swim,’ directed and written by Bryce McGuire along with writer Rod Blackhurst, arrived in theaters in the United States on January 5, 2024. Based on the 2014 short film, the horror thriller stars Wyatt Russell, Kerry Condon, Amélie Hoeferle, Gavin Warren, and Jodi Long. Produced by Jason Blum and James Wan under the production banners of Atomic Monster and Blumhouse Productions, it is distributed by Universal Pictures.
Night Swim Budget Revealed
According to reports, ‘Night Swim’ is also a small horror film from Universal Pictures and Blumhouse, with a reported production budget of $15 million, excluding printing and advertising costs. With a $15 million budget, the horror film is likely a contender for the anticipated small-budgeted film of the year. It also proves that Blumhouse and Universal are sticking to their low-cost production plans, regardless of their recent horror films being huge blockbusters, such as ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s,’ ‘M3GAN,’ and ‘The Black Phone.’
Even though the production budget of ‘Night Swim’ is quite low, it is also a fact that Universal spends a lot on the marketing of all its films. The marketing cost of ‘Night Swim’ is too high compared to the production cost, even three times more than it. Marketing is a significant factor that has contributed to the success of the production of films in recent times. While there is a marketing advantage, there is also a disadvantage, as this is going to keep the break-even mark of ‘Night Swim’ too high. Maybe the box office numbers look good, but the film will now have to exceed expectations for success.
The opening numbers are well within the production budget, but considering the break-even mark, including marketing expenses, these numbers are nothing special and are worrying for the makers. Not only this, many sources and viewers are also calling it the ‘M3GAN’ of 2024, but this does not seem to be happening far and wide. ‘M3GAN’ grossed $181 million against its $12 million budget and was a blockbuster, but ‘Night Swim’ would be a major achievement if it could gross $100 million. There is no comparison.
