The latest live-action film, ‘The Little Mermaid’, has made its debut in theaters with high expectations and potential but opened with received mixed reviews. Critics praised its production values, strong performances, and visually stunning screenplay. However, it faced criticism for its lackluster story adaptation, effects, casting controversies, and shortcomings in its musical aspects. Not only did the reviews reflect this, but the live-action remake also performed up to expectations and opened with good numbers. But despite these performances, there are no positive prospects in sight for the makers as overseas markets remain a matter of concern.

Walt Disney Studios’ live-action ‘The Little Mermaid’, made its grand debut in the United States on May 26, 2023, graced over 4,300 theaters nationwide and achieved a remarkable feat by amassing a whopping $38 million on its opening day, including a $10.3 million from previews[1] and 3-day gross of $95.57 million and a 4-day opening weekend collection of $118.81 million at the domestic box office— that’s a solid and well-expected start is indeed impressive, still, it falls slightly short of the lofty expectations associated with a film of such a massive budget and scale. Overall, ‘The Little Mermaid’ has so far grossed $298.17 million domestically and $271.42 million overseas, for a global total of $569.59 million.

According to sources, ‘The Little Mermaid’ underwent an extensive production process, with an astounding budget of $250-265 million. Additionally, the filmmakers invested a considerable sum of $150 million in marketing efforts to promote the film. However, despite these substantial investments, the film’s box office performance fell short of expectations.

Despite a decent domestic opening, considering the substantial costs involved, industry experts estimated a range of $550 million in lifetime global earnings as overseas is a total average. With a break-even point set at $650 million to achieve profitability, ‘The Little Mermaid’s overall result is considered a box office flop, also incurring a small loss for distributors. Ultimately, this outcome signifies a missed opportunity for the makers and distributors as the film struggles to achieve significant financial success.

Controversies surrounding ‘The Little Mermaid’ and Disney’s recent unsuccessful films had an impact on the movie’s box office performance, and now it is too difficult for the live-action to generate profit for the makers. Disney has faced criticism for incorporating social and political themes into their films, leading to controversies known as “woke mistakes.” These decisions have divided audiences and sparked backlash, with some feeling that storytelling and entertainment have been overshadowed.

There is a perception that Disney is repeating these mistakes, leading to disillusionment among fans. These controversies can potentially impact the box office performance of Disney’s films and their overall brand reputation. In our opinion, Disney should give it up and focus on better movies as these tactics are completely useless in overseas markets, and Disney is a Worldwide Production.
